Doxycycline
Doxycycline is a synthetic tetracycline antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections. The active ingredient in Doxycycline is monodox which is formulated as oral tablets that are available in strengths of 50mg, 75mg and 100mg.
Drug Uses
Doxycycline is available by prescription only. Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections that include acne, gum disease, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and rosacea, as well as other conditions as determined by a doctor. Doxycycline may be used in conjunction with other medications to treat certain amoebic infections.
Doxycycline does not treat viral infections such as the common cold.
Dosage
Always use Doxycycline as directed by a doctor. Certain brands of this drug should not be taken with dairy products - discuss this with your doctor. Doxycycline should be taken with a full glass of water.
ADULTS AND CHILDREN WEIGHING MORE THAN 100 POUNDS: The usual dose is 200mg on the first day (take 100mg every 12 hours, or 50mg every six hours), thereafter 100mg a day (this may be taken as a single dose or 50mg every 12 hours). Severe infections may require 100mg every 12 hours.
CHILDREN OVER THE AGE OF 8 YEARS: The usual dose for children weighing less than 100 pounds is 2mg per pound of body weight, divided into two doses on the first day. Subsequent treatment is 1mg per pound of body weight, taken as a single dose or divided into two equal doses. Severe infections may require up to 2mg per pound of body weight.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
Precautions
Doxycycline may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. If you go outdoors wear protective clothing and apply a sunscreen with a high SP factor.
While using Doxycycline increase your intake of fluids to reduce the risk of irritation to the esophagus and ulcers.
